WeChat updated to version 5.0 – introduced m-payments, sticker store and game center

WeChat, a cross platform mobile messaging app has just gone through a fresh update for iOS platform today. The new 5.0 update brings several interesting features like mobile payments, a game center and a sticker store. WeChat is known as Weixin in china.

Its stickers- which are one of the unique features of WeChat will now have its own centralized store. The store will enable users to browse through a collection of stickers – and purchase more interesting ‘premium’ stickers – adding a smart way for the company to monetize. Moreover, one can also access mobile payments via WeChat. Users can link their online banking account with the application to pay for items, reports TechWeb.

With a lot more games anticipated to be added soon in its game center, one can now play games on WeChat in addition to other social gaming linkage features like sharing scores and challenge others members.

The app however, is optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.3 or later.

Developed by the Chinese internet Giant ‘Tencent’, WeChat has around 400 million registered users around the world – making it one of the most popular social networking cross border mobile chatting app, among others.

Launched in May 2013, WeChat with its huge marketing push in India is giving a head on competition to global leader WhatsApp, and emerging local players like Hike. Tencent is continuously marketing WeChat via Tv and online marketing ads. It is also marketing aggressively on games site Ibibo, in which Tencent holds a stake.
